My name's Samuel Zachery Guthrie, but I reckon you can just call me Sam. Officially, I'm listed as a professor at The Xavier Institute for Higher Learning.

I was born and raised on a retired farm in the Kentucky heartland with my nine - yes, nine! - younger brothers and sisters. It wasn't so bad as all that. At least, not until my father died from coal miner's disease. I was only fifteen at the time, and I dropped out of school to work in the mines so I could help my mom support the family. She wasn't happy about it, but she couldn't exactly afford to feed nine kids at the time, either. I would've been just fine with this, but only a couple months after I started working there, there was a cave-in at the mine. That's when I found out that I'm a mutant. I grabbed the fellow who had been working with me at the time, and sort of flew out of there with him. Made the papers and everything.

That incident got the attention of Professor Charles Xavier, who runs a school for mutants the gifted up in New York. He flew down to Kentucky himself to ask my mom if she would let me attend. She was already more than a little scared that there might be a backlash if people figured out that it was a mutant who was the town hero, so she sent me with him. I can't blame her, I guess.

That was about five years ago, give or take. I guess you could say that a lot's happened since then, saved the world a couple times, but I wouldn't really call it anything to write home about.
